The Seventh of May, Two Thousand and Thirteen

Every first Tuesday of the month, Monika and I have a Barley Legal Homebrewers meeting.  Since the meeting is closer to work than our home, we decided to meet for dinner before we headed to the meeting.

IMAG0306

Normally we grab dinner or a least a bite to eat at Iron Hill in Maple Shade. But, before the meetings, it gets really crowded at the bar, so instead, we met at Champps Americana. They have great veggie burgers and great beer.

IMAG0307

Then, to Iron Hill for our meeting. This month our meeting was actually a testing session for Philly Beer Geek competition. We all participated, and had more fun than business as usual.

IMAG0308

and, of course, there was beer tasting. Best part may have been our new, customized, Barley Legal King of the Hill Beer Club mugs. And, I won some beer in the raffle, and that’s always a nice thing – leaving with more than I came with.

New Year’s Day Mummers Parade in Philly 2013

some damned fancy mother f'ers

Okay, so we had a hell of a party at our house New Year’s Eve. But, for the first time in my life, we decided to try to make it to the Mummer’s Parade in Center City, Philadelphia. It was a groggy morning, but we made it to the train, and made it to the parade.

IMAG0426

I’m glad we did, even though it was kind of shot lived. We were a bit hung over, but really, who wasn’t. We got a spot right on the parade line, and tried to hold ourselves together, with the help of a flask.

IMAG0416

It truly is iconic, being only a few blocks away from City Hall. I’ve lived in NYC before, but I’ll always feel like Philly is my home.

IMAG0419

We got to hang out with my friend Chris, whom we hadn’t seen in a very long time, and it was a great time to reconnect with old friends. Sam decided it was high time to be reckless, jump barriers, do shots, and climb lamp posts. That’s how you know you’re doing it right.

IMAG0422

This was after I freaked, and told Sam we were going to get arrested. In reality, we probably weren’t the most drunk people on the parade route, but those bands really know how to party. Eventually, we crawled back to the train and back to Atco. First parade in Philly ever, and I think we should do it again next year. We must gather redemption.

Christmas Day 2012 Hike with Friends

We went exploring on Christmas Day, after opening some gifts we had gotten each other. Two of my favorite local abandoned places.

This is inside one of the abandoned trains down at Winslow Junction. Since I've been coming here, the amount of cars has slowly gone down, I assume because they are being scrapped. there was once at least a hundred cars, but now there's maybe a dozen.

Monika, Ehsan and Sam, who had “found” herself a hell of a walking stick.

And, the inside of the other abandoned location, a former recycling plant. It used to be filled with garbage 25 feet high, but it's now cleared out, so something is happening there, although I have no idea what yet. We had to cleverly gain access.

You can see all four of my hiking companions in this photo. Looks like it should be the cover of an album, in my opinion. Christmas Day with friends, hiking. Nothing I wanted to do more.

Julia Nunes Live @ Philadelphia Living Room Concert Series 12-10-2012

it was dark, and a bit difficult to take pictures sitting Indian style on the hard wooden floor of what seemed to be a rented row home that some University students lived in. But, the lighting was a bit better when Julia signed shirts with Monika and Maya.

And, the videos came out a bit shitty, too, but I've included them here for anyone who is a fan. It wasn't the smallest concert I've ever been to, but it's gotta be in the top 3. Catch her next time she's in Philly if you like the songs below. The shows are always very lighthearted and fun, and tickets are usually under twenty bucks, something you don't see very much anymore.

2012 Philadelphia Marathon

I really love this building. It's a shame not many people get to see it. I always thought this main room would be an awesome venue for a low key show of some sort. the acoustics are amazing. It used to be a market, and rail lines used to run right through here. Their location is still marked on the floor with parallel lines the whole length of the room.

It serves as a sort of art gallery, also. Arching ceilings really give you the feeling of being in a huge hangar.

a shot of downtown Philly from the steps right on Market street. I always love the site of the Philly skyline. It will always remind me of growing up here in South Jersey, watching the skyline morph over the years.

this is a random corner on Market Street. Not sure what it means, exactly, but interesting. I'm always looking down when I walk in the city, usually looking for Toynbee Tiles.

Mayor Nutter gave high fives as people crossed the finish line, 26.2 miles and 4 hours after starting the run.

Monika, the champion. okay, maybe not the most flattering picture she'd like me to post publicly, but hey, she just RAN A MARATHON. Give her some slack.

This is Monika and her friend, who was only going to run a half marathon, but Monika convinced her to run another half during the race. She really has a way with convincing people to do crazy things with her.

Kat made it too, her first marathon as well. We were both super proud of them. And, glad we finally got our wives back. They had been training non-stop, everyday, for like 6 months, so yeah, we were looking forward to this whole thing being over already. I'm sure they were also!

Silver Recovery

bucket of awesome.

This is the year end bucket of silver we recovered from the fixer at NFL Films. When people see us cleaning the recovery system through the glass walls in our lobby, they think we’re cleaning off some kind of built up crud to throw away.

sliver of silver.

On the contrary, this half-full, five-gallon bucket costs about 50 Grand. Not too bad for a bucket of crud.

Steve Sabol Memorial Ceremony at NFL Films

Posted in Daily Pictures, Reflections, Sports on November 10, 2012 by Verge

Today, at NFL Films in Mt Laurel, we had a company wide memorial service for our fallen and fearless leader, Steve Sabol, who recently died from brain cancer that was diagnosed only a year ago, and whom was still walking the halls of our building just three months ago.
In this picture, you can see our new sign, with our new address, covered by a black blanket. It was uncovered, after a short speech, by his wife, his sister Blair, whom our original company was named after by Steve’s father, Big Ed, and Hank McElwee, famed cinematographer who still runs the film show out here.
We are now located at One Sabol Plaza (good luck with that one on your GPS)

They set up a stage and speakers, and gave a eulogy before unveiling the sign.

We raised a new flag, as well. That’s Steve’s initials, and the design that he used with his artwork and collages that have been appearing in galleries the last few years.

The flagpoles in the front lawn of NFL Films was actually one of Steve’s last requests. We never had them before last year, and he thought that we should. The third flag pole was flying a Giant’s logo last week, and it was supposed to commemorate the reigning Super Bowl Champions. That tradition was short lived.  The tree in the foreground was planted in memory of Steve, who loved the outdoors, and symbolizes the continued growth of NFL Films.

Others took photos as well, and some, perhaps, felt some kind of closure.

The new sign at our entrance…

…which of course was filmed for a future highlight of the day’s ceremony. This one was for Steve’s “family,” those of us at the continue to carry his vision and are his living legacy.
There will be another, much larger, ceremony in February, after the Super Bowl at the Kimmel Center. It will be the first Super Bowl ever that Steve will not attend.

This is the “Bridge” at our building that connects the administrative side of the building to the technology side. It’s now named something different.

Sudden Death Sabol,” as he was nicknamed, now takes on a completely different, and poignant meaning.

Inside our lobby, a new picture greets visitor to our location. A picture of Ed and Steve Sabol, a few years back, when Ed accepted his last Emmy Award for Lifetime Achievement. A few years later, Steve was there when his father was inducted into the Hall of Fame, something that we all hoped Ed would be alive to see. Now, we’re lucky that Steve was as well.

Watch a short video of the ceremony here

And, follow NFL Films on Facebook here.

Plane Reflections

Posted in Daily Pictures on October 8, 2012 by Verge

On a plane, flying from Los Angeles to Philadelphia.   Thinking about the people I love.   My wife, sleeping in my lap.   My friends Elysa, and Sarah, whom I cherish to tears.   My father and mother, who took me on many plane trips when I was younger.

When I was a kid, I thought every plane was a chartered plane,   and every kid got to hang out in the cockpit.   Now, I know, my father and grand father both being pilots gave me privileged opportunities, ones that kids don’t get these days.  I had royal treatment.   It really was like traveling by folding a map.

I look down to the desert, on awkward squares and circles, looking forward to my best friend picking me up from PHL, like we’ve done for each other dozens of times.

Perhaps, one day, or in another life, I’ll become a pilot.  Look down on everything, find a perfect place to live, and land, with everyone I love on board.

The Twenty Ninth of July, Two Thousand and Twelve

started out the day late on Sunday with Sam and Monika. woke up at the Flying W. After breakfast, we headed to the Goodwill Store to see what we could find. Why do dolls always look like they’re surprised?  Or terrified?

perhaps it’s just me, but dolls are so creepy.

found this really cool little toy musical instrument. considered it for a moment, but decided it was untuneable, so I passed.

found just what I needed over in the computer and electronics department. some of you might not even realize what you’re looking at here.  wow, a whole MEG!!

after scoring nearly nothing, off to Franklin Hall in Philly.

First time here. nice place. decent beer selection, but wouldn’t say the greatest.

to the left is the inside portion of the faux German beer garden, and to the right is the outside courtyard. you can see Monika and Sam conveniently found the bar..

Looking in the opposite direction. if you don’t fancy the picnic tables outside, there is some fancier seating inside, with tvs.
As the sun was setting over Philadelphia and our weekend. We hadn’t seen Sam in a few weeks because we’re all so damn busy.
The place was pretty damn expensive for a beer garden
but you can’t put a price on this.
