Kat’s Dinner

Posted in Bar and Lounge Reviews, Daily Pictures, Good Times with tags , on October 28, 2010 by Verge

We decided to play it low key for Kat’s birthday, and so just the four us went out.  Kat chose Bar Ferdinand, a fancy little place in Northern Liberties in a newly renovated section of town.  This section is called The Piazza, and it’s pretty damn nice.  It was built on the site of the old Schmidt’s Brewery and includes apartments, restaurants, store and artists’ studios.  At the one end, there’s a huge LED television overlooking the courtyard.  Last night, game 1 of the World Series was on.

This is a view of the Piazza. It's across the street from the restaurant we dined at. It was a damn fine place to sit back with a beer and a cigar, and watch the World Series in beautiful weather.

These are the apartments that overlook the Piazza.

Bar Ferdinand has lots of tapas, which is basically the same as saying “expensive, small appetizers.”  That being said, they were all delicious.  We all shared everything we ordered, and had many drinks as well.  The atmosphere was great, and it was busy but not crowded on a Wednesday night, so it was nearly perfect dining.

The seasonal craft brew list. I had the "Abbey of Christ in the Desert" Belgian Ale that was unmemorable, and the delicious Duck-Rabbit DoppleBock! Highly recommended.

but, the evening was all about a night out with close friends.

Back Home

I have been running around, cleaning up all the loose ends from vacation.  Had to sanitize all the clothes just in case we got some bed bugs along the way, but I’m pretty sure we’re clean because I checked all the rooms before we slept in them.  Perhaps the bedbug problem isn’t as bad as it’s made out to be.  I stayed in average hotels, 7 different ones in 7 nights, and found no trace of bedbugs at any of them.

I’m sick, also.  Not sure how it happened.  Traveling can do that to you.  Ten hours on a plane back from Italy can do that to you for sure.  And, perhaps, the jolt of being on a care free vacation and suddenly having to work the next day can certainly contribute to a weakened immune system.  Not so funny thing is, because I had not started this year expecting to go to Italy for a week, I’m not sure I even have any days off left to take a sick day anymore.  Gotta check with the boss today.

I am working on a small collection of photos to post from our trip.  I easily took over a thousand.  We were in 9 different cities over the course of a week.  I was in more churches in 7 days than probably the last ten years combined.  But, vacation was over, and we were back to reality in no time.  So…back in the Berlin Mart…

Originally wanting to call his new store "Mother fuckin' Spices, Nigga'," and then the tamer "Spices 'n Shit," Bob finally settled on the more PC name of "Spices and Stuff."

I organize and label like a fiend. I think the store had to up its budget on labeling tape since I've landed there.

For the Eagles game, I made individual tin foil bowls of nachos for everyone. Worked out pretty good. I considered making a whole blog about how to do it, but the picture should pretty much explain everything you need to know.

Library of Congress, Packard Campus

Posted in Daily Pictures, Good Times with tags , , , , on October 13, 2010 by Verge

For work this past weekend, some colleagues and I traveled to Culpeper, Va to tour the Library of Congress’ image, film and audio archives in Culpeper, Virginia.  It’s kind of geeky, but for us film preservationists and archivists, it’s truly awesome.  If you think you were impressed with some of the shots I’ve posted of NFL Films, prepare to be overwhelmed with dorky overload.

This is the exterior front door. The building was built partially out of the remains of a secret bunker that housed currency for the federal reserve during the Cold War. This is part of the new construction.

The first stop on our tour were the nitrate vaults. Nitrate film, manufactured in the early days and for the first half of the last century, is extremely hazardous. It spontaneously combusts, and burns quickly, even when completely submerged in water.

As a result, many of the gems of history have perished in huge warehouses on the lots of film production houses. At the Library of Congress, all nitrate films are stored in sealed, concrete vaults, isolated from one another, and closely guarded with fire suppression systems. At NFL Films, when we find nitrate film, we ship it the hell out, right to this place.

This is a mish mash of audio recording gear. I suppose they sometimes use this stuff, but it's really just to showcase some of the historic audio equipment that they've acquired.

This is the black and white processor. This is particularly interesting for me. Its very informative to see how other labs navigate the delicate problems that can arise with these machines. There is a no-error necessity, and half the work is done in the dark.

in the center of the complex, they have a sort of museum that showcases some old projectors from the early days of film.

I'm thinking that they don't use this one to project images so much anymore.

A shot of the underground stacks. This vault is part of the old bunkers that were built under a hill. It's all concrete. This room was huge and kind of looked like the final shot of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

film that is not nitrate (usually safety film) is stored here. We only got to go into one of them, but there were literally at least 60. This is the main hallway.

a shot not unlike the one I took of our own vault back in Mt Laurel. Very organized and unending.

remember, this is the inside of one vault...one of many. The temperature hovers just above freezing, so you better know exactly what you're going in for and where it is. Not a place to browse too long.

The building was built by David Woodley Packard of Hewlett-Packard fame. It was then donated to the government as the largest ever private gift to the Legislature. Ivy has begun to cover the building and it will eventually stealth the campus into the hillside, much like the secret bunkers hid themselves earlier.

out in the center, there is a fountain (not working in this picture). Being pretty close to Washington D.C., and having underground, concrete bunkers makes this fountain look suspiciously similar to an emergency helicopter pad.

They have a beautiful theater and actually showcase some of their treasures regularly to the general public.

I imagine it's quite relaxing to work here everyday. The building is very serene and laid back. It looked pretty damn stress free, with great benefits courtesy of tax payers.

Culpeper, Virginia! My future home if the NFL Labor dispute lasts a long time.

Valenzano Winefest 2010

Posted in Daily Pictures, Good Times with tags , , on September 21, 2010 by Verge

We didn’t have a huge group with us this year for Winefest, but we had a great time either way.  Valenzano Winery has around 20 different types of wines, all grown entirely from grapes grown in South Jersey.  That mean while other so-called New Jersey wineries import a percentage of their wine juices from other states like California, Valenzano only ferments New Jersey grapes.

Believe it or not, New Jersey is the fifth largest wine-producing state in the country and has over 40 wineries.  There’s even a Wine Growers Association (which is a little weird because you make wine, but grow grapes).  Valenzano, right in Shamong Township ten minutes from here, is one of the best.  They make Champagne, a delicious Old Indian Mills red, and my favorite, their recently designed Port.

This is about as rowdy as wine drinkers get

that's how full all glasses of wine should be

we had security take a picture of the three of us. that's my new hat

this is a shot of the bumper crop. the grape vines were literally saggging from the wieght of all the grapes.

it was a beautiful day, nearly the perfect day for drinking among the grape vines

the Gas House Gorillas. Pretty fun band, even if the singer wears a wife beater with suspenders.

Next year, we are getting a private tent.  Let me know if you want in.  It a great time and a perfect way to sample local wines among friends.

Hiking and Eagles

Posted in Daily Pictures, Good Times with tags , , , on September 14, 2010 by Verge

Monika works 7 days a week, which can obviously be pretty exhausting.  Especially because 5 of those days are spent chasing toddlers.  I can’t even imagine the patience and determination one needs to accomplish such a task.  Sunday she made it home by one.  I made her lunch, gave her free pick to do whatever she wanted that afternoon.

lunch (that's right, I took a picture of my sandwich. that's perfectly normal to me)

Monika called her sister because she had decided we were going hiking.  half an hour later, we packed up some things and headed here.

I collect stamped bricks with different names. I found three I've never seen before.

Later, when we got back to the house, the Eagles game was on.  Usually Kreg and I watch the game together all season long, but he was occupied, so I had to try to watch alone.  I’m not really the biggest football fan to begin with, but to try to watch it with two completely uninterested women really is quite difficult.

Oh, and it’s kind of a challenge when you don’t have cable…

Hi Def baby!

We made a pizza to enjoy while watching the Eagles suck! It came out awesome

Later that night, after the game, I pickled peppers (for real), but that is a post all its own.  Then, to an early bed because I had to be up at 5 am to go and work week one of the new season.

Keg & Barrel and Sisters Nightclub

Posted in Daily Pictures, Good Times with tags , , , on September 13, 2010 by Verge

I began to brew my own beer a few years ago when Kreg got one of those Mr. Beer kits.  Over the years, he and I have found time whenever we can to experiment with different recipes and methods.  Some batches are an amazing success and I’m eager to share a homebrew with friends who will be obviously thoroughly impressed at my amazing brewing skills.  Others have been dumped into the sewer, literally.

Not long ago, there was a home brew supply store down off the Black Horse Pike called Beercrafters.  They had ample supplies and a well learned staff who were pretty damn helpful.  I learned a lot there, and spent even more money.  For some reason, after 16 years, they suddenly closed, and I was left to search for a reliable shop that wasn’t in Philly or in Freehold.

Then, like magic, a new shop opened in the Berlin Farmer’s Market right around the corner from my house in Atco.  At first, there wasn’t a ton of stuff, but over the weeks, the bare shelves started to fill up with product.  And good product, tons of product I had never seen at the “other” beer supply stores.  So, I had found a new supply store and the brewing proceeded.

Now, when Kreg and I brew beer, we usually drink beer.  Brewing beer is exactly like drinking a lot of beer except that the stove is on and the entire house smells like beer, so guests don’t know it’s actually you reeking.  On several occasions, we had to make runs to the beer store on the day of the brew for some last minute supplies.

A few times I ran into a girl who was working the register and helping out customers.  The store really isn’t all that busy, maybe 2 or 3 people in there at a time, max.  So Gina was really helpful and pretty outgoing and really tried to make customers feel welcome.  Turns out, it’s her and her husband’s shop.  Pretty good motivation to be friendly and helpful.

So, with a nice buzz on, I noticed a sign on the register that said help wanted.  I asked her about it and she offered to take my information down.  I gave it up, not knowing the hours they needed filled, nor the cash it would be paying.  I just thought, “hey, what the hell, working at a beer making store would be pretty cool, right?”

Well, I didn’t hear from Gina, or her husband for at least  a month, and based on my social skills at that first interview, and the scrawl that would only pass for an application at a car wash or gas station, I figured they’d dismissed me all together.  Not so!  They called, and I now work at Keg & Barrel, the finest home brew and wine supply store this side of the Delaware River.

If there is ever a zombie apocalypse, I'm grabbing my Winchester and headed to the home brew store. Enough supplies to keep me alive for at least...a week.

This is the Berlin Mart interior. Filled with crap, tube socks, weird foods I would never eat and...

...the finest tee shirts money can buy!

The bathrooms have granite floors and marble sinks. that red thing outside the door on the table...Yep! that's actually a tip jar for the guy who thinks this is "clean."

Well, my first day was pretty good.  The staff I worked with were awesome, friendly, and totally helpful.  The customers weren’t too bad either.  I definitely know, for fact, I will have many a blog telling stories about the lively characters you’ll find at the Berlin Mart.  And, I’ll have a little extra beer money.  How convenient.

Later that night, we headed into Philly to Sisters Nightclub to celebrate the marriage of two friends to one another.  They were friends that Monika had met in grad school and are awesome.  Monika not only convinced them to get married where we got married (The Valley Green Inn, because it’s just damn beautiful), but also that they should use our photographer friend Kat to shoot their whole wedding.

didn't want to take too many pictures in a club, but the self portrait is a must

Congratulations Megan and Jenny!  It just gets better and better, I promise.

The Sixth of August, Two Thousand and Ten (Our Weekend with Sam and Tuk)

Posted in Daily Pictures, Good Times with tags , , , on September 9, 2010 by Verge

So, our last  night in Ohio was spent late night with Tuk’s sister and husband again. The next morning, Sam was off early and Monika, Tuk and I were very hungry.  Only on place to go…

The Wawa of the Western PA...Sheets!

Monika contemplates whether to order or plunder

okay, they had whole wheat rolls for us veggie dorks.

Lunch, a beer and....

so long Tuk, and thanks for all the memories

oh wait...you can buy fireworks legally in Ohio

I chose the biggest ones that they had

400 miles home

Franklin Square, the base of the Ben Franklin Bridge

We love those two, and their friends, and road trips.  And, finally coming back home to see our cats…and friends too.  Next time we see Sam and Tuk, they’ll be in costumes, and the leaves will be red and orange and yellow, and my garden will be dead, and we’ll be sure to have plenty of whiskey when they arrive, and a nice, warm bed for them to sleep in for as long as we can keep them here.

The Fifth of September, Two Thousand and Ten (Our weekend with Sam and Tuk)

I think at some point the night before, we decided to set up Rock Band.  That was a huge mistake.  I fell asleep on the couch shortly after.

The next morning, we cooked a huge vegetarian breakfast, and it was truly epic delicious.

Monika makes crepe batter, Sam cuts fresh fruit

we ate breakfast in the backyard on a beautiful morning

fresh oranges, plumbs, peaches; vegan fried sausage; pepper, mushroom, mozzarella egg omelet; jam filled crepes!

Tuk enjoys the feast!

Rocky Big Head enjoys the company, or maybe the smell of vegetarian sausage

Sam's eye darkens. Good thing Tuk didn't have to tell her twice.

After a solid breakfast, we went back to Mill Creek Park to go kayaking.  When we got there, though, there were non kayaks, only paddle boats, so we went paddle boating for an hour.  Unfortunately, I didn’t take the camera cause I was thinking we were going in kayaks.  It was a pretty good time that was spent mostly peddling as hard as we could into one anothers boats.

at the flaming ice cube, the girls bought TVP. We used it to make Vegetarian Cheese Steaks for lunch, and it was just as good as always.

The Canfield Fair was in town, and we had to go.

later, we got dressed for an evening at the county Fair

the girls prepare to impress on the drive in.

horses are huge, but very gentle, and very hungry

sometimes they ate, but most of the time, the animals just shat or slept.

don't get me wrong, though, they were all adorable, especially the bunny section

then off to the carnival side of the fare

to ride some rides. We all enjoy crazy, upside down, rickety carnival rides (except Steve)

a fist full of fun

and another day full of great adventures

The Fourth of September, Two Thousand and Ten (Our weekend with Sam and Tuk)

We were literally so busy this weekend, I didn’t even check the stats on my blog let alone update it.  Shit, I didn’t even make an appearance on Facebook for three days straight.

Well, here it is…our weekend in pictures.

Breakfast with Sam. The first half of this bottle is what caused Sam's facial injury. None of us know can remember how it happened.

Maker’s Mark 46 is a delicious bourbon that, hopefully, will not be a limited edition, while supplies last endeavor by my favorite distillery.

Monika plays emo girl in her new Paramore hoodie

Monika and Sam went to the bread store. Steve had to work on Saturday morning.

Vegan cafe, even in Ohio. I wished I got to this place, but Monika and Sam left me at home. The food that they brought back was awesome.

Looks like they have two locations, and I recommend you hit them up when you’re in Cleveland!

and the party begins again!

we went for a hike at Mill Creek Park. Had no idea where we were going, but it hardly matters

Mill Creek Park is a huge park in Youngstown.  Oddly enough, Youngstown share some interesting similarities to our neck of the woods.  For instance, parts of Youngstown are often considered just as bad as parts of Camden, NJ.  On the other hand, Mill Creek Park is the second largest metropolitan park in the country, with only Fairmount Park in Philly surpassing it.  I didn’t see any abandoned neighborhoods. I did see a whole lot of beautiful foot trails and paths, and we had an amazing 4 hour hike.

I have enough of these to make a "chicks and trucks" calendar

working on building memories

Monika was pretending the ground was lava. how convenient, for her.

Monika thought this was a good pic of me, and insisted I put it in the blog.

we found a playground, and took advantage

that girl is a monster.

for dinner, we went to a Lebanese restaurant, and it was truly delicious (and had tons of vegan food)

Apparently a chain, they have these places everywhere, as close as Maryland.  The food was affordable and generous, the staff was awesome, and they had a liquor license.  And we took a doggy bag home.

alien eyes

her too!

we hit up a bar after dinner, and it was delicious.

Beer and Liquor sales are a little different in Ohio, and actually better than the sale laws in Jersey and PA.  It’s not too difficult to beat PA, but lately, the Jersey laws have gotten pretty liberal.  Nevertheless, Ohio has it a lot cooler.  First of all, you can get beer and wine at any local Sheets, which is basically the Ohio equivalent of Wawa, but on steroids.  I know it sounds crazy, but they are better.

And then there’s the Vintage Estate Wine and Beer.  They have 800 vareities of bottled beer that you can buy by the case, sixer, of single bottle.  The twist is this.  You can buy a bottle, walk into the next room, and sit down and the bar and drink it!  They give you a chilled glass, and even have a dozen local micro brews on tap.  You can even walk back into the liquor store and browse the selections while still drinking your brew.  Pretty amazing.

at dinner, we met Steve's sister...

...and her husband John...

for a late night party fire back at Steve and Sam's

The Second of September, Two Thousand and Ten *Monika’s Birthday

Posted in Daily Pictures, Good Times with tags , on September 2, 2010 by Verge

It was Monika’s birthday, but unfortunately we both had to work.  After work, in preparation for the weekend’s adventure, I had to stop by my local brew shop for some supplies.

perhaps my possible future place of employment

Kreg came by to deliver some presents, and I snapped this mostly disturbing shot…

monika and the "dirty neighbor"

Monika shows off one of the presents I gave her

Fat Tomato for birthday dinner courtesy of my second parents...

Fat Tomato have got a handful of vegetarian options, and they could be made vegan by request.  Not the healthiest, that’s for sure, but damn delicious cuisine with a nod towards healthy-esque.  They served french fries with a reduced balsamic vinegar as dressing instead of cheddar cheese and bacon bits!

later, Marla and Rob visit with presents for M and beer for R

despite my objections, M tries to smuggle our cat into Ohio!!

Stay tuned>>>  —verge
